The fabric decides how the wrap behaves more than the tying does. Here's what each one is good at.
Light, crinkled, grips itself. The easiest fabric to learn on and the one to reach for in summer — it breathes and it forgives a crooked fold.
Heavier with a long drape. It holds a twist without pins and gives the fullest volume over a shaper. Warmest of the four.
For Shabbos and simchas. It shines and it slips, so wear a cotton band underneath and let the satin do only the outer layer.
Cotton bands for full coverage in one motion, and a light shaper for height at the crown. Both wash flat and dry overnight.

Two minutes, no pins, holds through carpool. Cotton gauze is the friendliest fabric for this one.

Hand wash cool with a mild soap, or machine wash on delicate inside a mesh bag. No bleach, no fabric softener — softener is what kills the grip on gauze.
Roll in a towel, press the water out, then hang to dry. Skip the dryer. Gauze is meant to stay crinkled; if you want satin smooth, steam it rather than iron it.
Roll, don't fold, and stand the rolls in a drawer. You'll see every color at once and no crease sets in.
Yes with a band, or with a square tied by the everyday wrap. If you cover fully, add the band under any square or satin wrap and you're set.
A 42″ square suits most tying styles. Choose the 28″ × 71″ long wrap if you want two passes around the head or volume over a shaper.
